Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?
I see psychotherapy and counselling as similar with the main difference being the amount of time you spend in therapy and the depth in which you wish to work. You may want to look at making changes about particular issues over a short time period to be agreed in advance or choose to work longer term to look more deeply about issues that are troubling you and affecting your life. The relationship between us will always be important but particularly so in longer term work where what happens between us in the sessions can help us understand more about how you experience life and relationships both now and may have done in the past which continue to impact on you in the present.
What happens at an initial consultation?
The purpose of this session is to give us a chance to meet and to get a sense of how we would feel working together. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, what you are hoping to resolve and how therapy may be of benefit to you. It will be an opportunity for me to ask you some questions about yourself, explain how I work and of course for you to ask me any questions you may have. If you don't feel that therapy with me is right for you there is no obligation to continue.
What about confidentiality and data protection?
The content of our sessions is confidential between us other than in exceptional circumstances which we will discuss when we meet. We will also discuss the data protection requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). I work within the BACP Ethical Framework and adhere to the UKCP Code of Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Conduct.
How long will therapy take?
This decision will depend on then issues you bring and what you want to look at and change in your life. It will also depend on how you wish to approach therapy whether by looking more deeply at underlying issues or to focus on particular issues within a specific time frame. Together we can discuss these different ways of working when we meet.
How are you supported in your work and accountable to your professional bodies?
I receive regular clinical supervision from a supervisor registered with both UKCP and BACP. I am committed to ongoing personal and professional development (CPD) not only through supervision but also attending short courses, keeping up to date with recent developments through reading relevant journals and in discussions with peers. I am required to provide evidence of my supervision and CPD for annual re-registration with both UKCP and BACP.
